HEALTHY EATING New Funding for Fresh Food Connections The California Department of Food and Agriculture recently notified HLN that it has been selected to receive a grant that will, among other things, help fund development of an online ordering system for local agricultural products and expansion of acreage devoted to specialt crop production as a means to increase access to fresh, local produce. Stay tuned for more details. Food Assessment Survey Deadline The deadline for producers and buyers to participate in the County Economic Development Department's local food assessment is October 25, 2009. The results of the survey will be used to determine local food production, consumer demand, opportunities for new local markets, emergency food supply resources. The results will also be complied in a local food guide. The survey is online at http://lccfa.wikispaces.com. Online USDA Resources www.cnpp.usda.gov/KnowYourFarmer.htm promotes national initiatives and features interesting facts about specific fruits, vegetables and other foods. www.MyFoodapedia.gov provides calorie count information on over 1,000 foods in the five food groups that people need to be healthy. www.MyPyramid.gov features tips for things like cutting back on salt, making more environmentally friendly food choices, setting good examples as a health role model for children. ACTIVE LIVING Recreation Survey Results of a survey designed to measure interest in different kinds of recreation were presented to the Board of Supervisors on 9/22/09. At their October meeting, HLN members discussed how to approach implementation of the recreational priorities identified by the 665 respondents. As a starting point, the top four activities for each age group will be compared to existing resources. With the goal of piloting family activity nights in a few high school gyms, HLN will also begin trying to identify qualified instructors for recurring themes in the srvey results such as gymnastics, martial arts and outdoor activities. Laureal Chambers, with the Santa Rosa office of Network for a Healthy California, is in the process of compiling a list of Lake County's recreational resources which she expects to conclude and provide to HLN next month. The Network is also distributing a booklet entitled, "Shape of Yoga" that combines 10 basic yoga poses with nutritional tips for use by families, teachers, seniors, etc. You can order your own copy at www.networkforahealthycalifornia.net.
CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) CATCH curriculum provides a flexible menu of age-appropriate nutrition lesson plans and physical activities. Four school sites (Highlands, Cobb, Kelseyville and Upper Lake) are leading the launch of this program. The CATCH workgroup meets the first Thursday or every other month from 2:30 to 3:30 in the Kelseyville High School Cafetorium. The workgroup focuses on coordinating existing school health/wellness programs to work in tandem with CATCH. |
