LOCAL FOOD GUIDE

HLN is surveying local farmers to find out what content they'd like to see in a local food guide.   The survey asks them to rank suggestions gathered at a variety of meetings over the last several months such as:

  • Seasonal crop availability
  • Primary crops of local farms
  • Farming methods
  • Retail outlets for locally grown foods
  • Farmers' Markets schedule
  • Recipes
  • Nutritional information
  • Food sufficiency resources

To submit your own suggestions for Local Food Guide content, please send an email to hlnassistant@sbcglobal.net

SNAP FLYERS

Approximately 3,000 two-sided tip sheets have been distributed at local grocery stores with news about an online application process for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a.k.a. food stamps and a sample of nutritional/cost comparison information.  Another 3,000 will be distributed In August.

Food stamps are utilized by only 50% of eligible Lake County residents depriving our local economy of approximately $6 million per year.

The tip sheets were developed with the assistance of Lake County Social Services Department as a project of HLN's Health Policy Cabinet.  You can download both English and Spanish versions of both sides below:

DATA WORKGROUP IDENTIFIES KEY INDICATORS

Earlier this year, HLN contracted with Ferron & Associates to help the Health Data Workgroup identify existing data resources in order to track changes in local health indicators and relate them to local efforts to improve population health.

Using CHIS, CA Physical Fitness Report, California Health Interview Survey, Cathy Ferron compiled a Prelimiinary Selection of Health Indicators for Tracking.  Health indicators include Overweight and Obestiy, Healthy Eating, Physical Fitness and Overall Health Status.

This information will be incorported into a presentation to the Board of Supervisors in September.

SCHOOL SITE RECREATION

HLN is continuing its efforts to find volunteers available to launch and sustain expanded recreational opportunities at school sites for students who are not necessarily interested in intramural sports.  The kinds of activities identified by respondents to HLN's 2009 Opinion Research and Survey of Property Owners included:

  • gymnastics
  • dance aerobics
  • yoga
  • martial arts

Two hundred survey respondents indicated that they would be willing to volunteer to support recreation in their community so HLN staff is calling those people to try and match their skills and availability to the needs of their local school.

REMINDER TO SCHOOLS

There will be a CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Schild Health) training on August 12, 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Kelseville High School Cafetorium.  CATCH is a grab-and-go classroom curriculum that incorporates engaging nutrition and fitness activities into classroom instruction.  The user-friendly, minimal preparation curriculum teaches to the standards and is adaptable to teachers' schedules with an array of activities that range from 10-30 minutes.  The K-8 curriculum can be used by classroom teachers, school nurses, after school programs, PE teachers, PTOs, and school food service.  Training and curriculum are provided by a grant from the California Endowment awarded to Sutter Lakeside Hospital on behalf of HLN.

Please contact Jackie Armstrong at (707) 274-2459 or hlnassistant@sbcglobal.net to sign-up for this final opportunity to learn about CATCH implementation and ways it can support student health, positive behavior and academic performance.
