Highlights from October 21, 2010 Workshop:

'GROWING OUR LOCAL FOOD ECONOMY'

Highlights of a talk by Ben Ratto, Bay Area Growers' Collaborative Distribution Manager, included:

  • Exciting ideas for using existing transportation resources (including Cisco);
  • Moves toward aggregating farm products to make distribution more efficient; and
  • Increased value and marketability by farmers branding their own products.
Highlights of other presentations included:
  • The beginning of a list (see October News Note) of potential crops, value added products and equipment needs as part of Hardesty's talk.
  • Ways that partnerships contribute critical Farm to School resources (food service cooking classes,  updated menus, and student outreach).
  • LAVA's food processing tutorial and vision for local value added projects.
