ACTIVE LIVING Network for a Healthy California Surveys Lake County Activity Resources The regional office of Network for a Healthy California (NHC) located in Santa Rosa has been working to develop a list of Physical Activity Resources in Lake County. Jennifer McClendon and Laurel Chambers provided a draft of their findings to HLN at its 12/17/09 meeting. Categories on the list include dance, fitness/sports clubs, gymnastics, hiking, martial arts, swimming, public parks and skateboard parks. Laurel expects to complete the list by HLN's January 2010 meeting. The resource list has already been helpful in identifying instructors for the Family Fitness Nights that HLN hopes to implement at various schools with the assistance of Lake County's Parks Department. MOVING THE MISSION FORWARD HLN partners (see Members page) gathered at the second meeting of the Health Policy Cabinet this December to identify assets and obstacles to improving population health in Lake County. Of course, Lake County's expansive public lands and natural recreational resources were at the top of the list of assets, as was a strong collaborative attitude among nonpofit organizations. Obstacles identified included communication with target populations and a decline in fresh food cooking skills in the wake of a growing dependence on prepared and fast foods. The Cabinet agreed to target both of these problems by attempting to develop a series of video cooking classes featuring local personalities. The series would be aired on TV8 and in the waiting rooms of hospitals, clinics, Department of Social Services, Social Security, etc. HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL! We have just completed our annual report to the CA Endowment. Many thanks to all of our HLN partners and broad network of supporters for their on-going efforts to improve the health of children and families. It's everyone's good work and willing spirit that enables us to consistently meet our project goals and objectives. |
